A couple of weeks ago we had our annual summer retreat. I have to confess that I was quite worried about this trip before we went. It did not have the makings of a good trip. That is probably in large part my own fault. I had told our students that we were going to try to go on a "beach retreat" this summer since we had been in the mountains last summer. That sounded like a good idea. But then once I started looking at different ones I ran into big problems. It seemed like with everything I looked at, either the dates were bad or the cost was just way too high. So I decided that we were going to have to cancel the beach retreat. We were going to completely for go a summer retreat but it wa suggested that we should do something. So at the last minute I tried to scrample and put something together. I found out about a retreat center that is run by the GA Baptist Convention in Forsyth, Georgia. It sounded like there were some decent activities so I signed us up. I knew it was going to be hard for me to sell this idea to the youth (A "baptist" camp for RA's in Forsyth, GA just didn't have the ring that Myrtle Beach had). But we promoted it for a couple of weeks. Even as we were getting ready to go i had my doubts since only 9 students had signed up. But I had spent quite a bit of time praying for the trip and the theme which was "Unity". God really seemed to bless those prayers as this truly was an awesome week. I don't know that there was any one thing that was just completely incredible about the week but everything was just a lot of fun. I had invited some friends of ours Marnus and Lisa Coetzee from OM that served in Ukraine with Tracy and I, to come along as our guest speakers/praise leaders. They did a great job and really seemed to bond well with the students. We had some great times of praise and learning. Nothing extravagant...quite simple actually, but so refreshing and insightful. We had time for some great games of kick ball and water polo. The staff at Camp Kaleo were great also. At first I was a little suspicious of some of the names (Swift, Stitch, Baloo, Splinter, Bulwinkle, Otter) but they proved to be very solid guys with good knowledge and excitment for serving. One of the best parts of the trip for me was the fact that we were not stuck to a rigid schedule which meant we had some flexibility and plenty of time to just hang out with each other. I think the fact that it was a smaller group and the fact that they all had GREAT attitudes meant we would have a successful week no matter where we were or what we were doing. I think there is a good chance we will be back in Forsyth some time in the future. Also be on the lookout for a video of the trip....COMING SOON (Get ready Carl)!!!
